High availability: what does it mean?

High availability (HA) ensures that your systems and applications remain accessible at all times, even in the event of a failure.

In a virtual architecture, this is achieved through mechanisms such as redundancy, backups and the ability to move VMs from one host to another without interruption.

In the physical world, when a server fails, the consequences can be serious:

  • Extended downtime: the fault must be identified, spare parts ordered or even the faulty hardware replaced.
  • Indirect costs: teams are left idle, and productivity losses can add up.
  • Increased risk to data: if backups are not up to date, some data may be lost.

On average, it takes several hours, or even days, to get a system back up and running in a traditional physical environment.

Fast recovery with virtualisation

With a virtual architecture, recovery is much faster:

  • Seamless migration: if a physical host fails, virtual machines can be moved automatically to another host without interruption.
  • Near-instant recovery time: services remain available thanks to redundancy and automated resource management.
  • No data loss: backups include not only your data, but also your software and the entire server configuration.

How high availability works in virtualisation

  • Hardware redundancy: several physical hosts are connected to the same cluster, each ready to take over.
  • Real-time monitoring: hypervisors automatically detect failures and start the necessary transfers.
  • Load balancing: VM workloads are redistributed to avoid overloading a single host.
  • Built-in snapshots and backups: before any critical operation, snapshots can be taken, allowing fast restoration if needed.

Key benefits of high availability:

  • Business continuity: your services remain available, even if a server fails.
  • Fault tolerance: system redundancy to avoid interruptions.
  • Lower indirect costs: less downtime means productivity is maintained.
